Playground and Daycare Turf: Safety, Impact Pads and Heat

A guide for schools, daycares and parents: how playground turf and impact pads work, what the safety standards cover, heat considerations and maintenance.

By Raysa Machado, Founder · 6 min read · Updated September 2026

Mulch washes away, sand gets tracked everywhere and rubber mats can get hot and hard. More schools, daycares and parents in Southwest Florida are switching to turf with impact pads for a softer, cleaner, more accessible play surface. Here's how it works.

How playground turf works

A playground system has layers: a compacted, draining base, a foam impact pad for fall protection and a soft, durable turf on top. The pad does the cushioning; the turf makes it clean, green and comfortable.

Safety standards to know

Playground surfaces are commonly evaluated against ASTM F1292 for impact attenuation, based on the fall height of the equipment, and ASTM F1951 for wheelchair accessibility. The CPSC Public Playground Safety Handbook is a widely used guide. The pad thickness is chosen based on the fall height of your equipment.

Impact pads

We use Polygreen Foam impact pads in 1-inch and 2-inch thicknesses, chosen for the equipment and fall height. Pads also add comfort for everyday play and help the surface drain.

Heat considerations

All turf warms in direct sun. We plan shade into play areas, choose heat-conscious turf and infill, and watch for window reflections that can concentrate heat. A quick rinse before play cools the surface fast.

Cleaning and care

Regular debris removal, occasional brushing and periodic sanitizing keep play areas fresh. We offer maintenance plans for schools and daycares.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is artificial turf safe for playgrounds?

With the right impact pad under it, turf provides cushioning for falls and a clean, accessible surface. The pad is selected for the fall height of the equipment.

What thickness impact pad do I need?

It depends on the fall height of your play equipment. We use Polygreen Foam pads in 1-inch and 2-inch thicknesses.

Is playground turf wheelchair accessible?

Turf over a firm base can provide an accessible surface. Accessibility is commonly evaluated under ASTM F1951.

Does playground turf get hot?

All turf warms in direct sun. Shade, heat-conscious turf and a quick rinse help keep it comfortable.
